To understand how to reduce heavy metals, you must first understand where they come from. Heavy metals are everywhere, from the water we drink to the organic vegetables we buy. This is because heavy metals are part of our environment. Some heavy metals are naturally found in the earth's crust, and others come from industrial production. Heavy metals are transferred from the earth, to plants, to the creatures who eat those plants and then, well, back to the earth. So, if you’re making products with real ingredients grown from the soil, it’s not a question of whether you’ll have to deal with heavy metals but HOW you’ll deal with them. The question of “how” is one we've attacked relentlessly. Cerebelly has proudly earned the Purity Award Certification from Clean Label Project, a third-party non-profit with the mission to bring truth and transparency to food and consumer products labeling that tests for harmful levels of heavy metals, chemicals, plastics, pesticides, and more. Clean Label Project standards are inspired by California Proposition 65 and the European Union stringent standard, underscoring their dedication to safeguarding vulnerable populations, particularly infants and young children. Heavy metals are often measured in percentage of California’s maximum allowable dose level (MADL = maximum allowable daily levels). Experts use this value because unfortunately, there are no federal limits for heavy metals in most foods, and California’s heavy metal standards are the most protective available. Watch ## Our Testing Approach Here's what we do above and beyond industry requirements ### 1. We start by choosing regions where the soil is naturally low in heavy metals. From there, we partner with farmers to test their crops — and only the cleanest batches make the cut. 1. Even something as small as an old barn with lead paint can contaminate soil for years. That’s why we carefully choose farms where the soil is safe and clean. On top of that, we strictly follow USDA Organic and non-GMO standards to make sure every ingredient meets the highest quality. ### 2. Every batch is tested — no exceptions. If it doesn’t meet our high standards, it never makes it to you. 2. We pull random samples from every batch and send them to an independent third party to confirm our standards are met. ### 3. We don’t shy away from nutrient dense and delicious ingredients that can pull naturally occurring heavy metals from the soil. Instead, we work until we find the best crops with the lowest levels. 3. A few of our ingredients are nutritional powerhouses — for example, carrots and sweet potatoes — and since they grow in the ground, they are susceptible to absorbing heavy metals in the soil. For those ingredients, even organic ones, we ask our farmers and purveyors to test their crops and meet strict specifications for low heavy metal content. We don’t stop there; we also send samples from each batch to a third-party certified lab to test for lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic before using them in any Cerebelly flavor. On top of that, we work with independent organizations, including the Clean Label Project, for random testing to keep us accountable. ### 4.
